After leaving Marrakech, we go south across the Tizi n'Tichka Pass (2260m), with spectacular views of the mountains and Berber villages along the route. We eat lunch in a typical eatery and then visit the World Heritage-listed Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou. More than 20 films have included this iconic kasbah as a background. After lunch, we go through Ouarzazate, Morocco's southernmost city, to the Skoura oasis, a lush location surrounded by vast palm trees. We continue on from Skoura to the Valley of Roses. The local community relies heavily on roses as a crop boost. Depending on weather circumstances, the rose season begins about 10 April and finishes around 20 May. The Moussem of Roses, also known as the Rose Festival, takes place on the second weekend in May and lasts two days. Many celebrations take place, including folk group performances and the Miss Roses contest, the winner of which is paraded on a decorated float. Traders from all around the region congregate to offer their wares and handicrafts. Finally, on this day, we arrive in the breathtaking Dades Gorge, where you will dine and stay the night in your hotel.
We leave Dades Gorge after breakfast and travel to Todra Gorges, a huge fault that rises to 200 meters in a small valley studded with palm trees and Berber villages. After lunch in the gorge, we go deeper into the Sahara to Merzouga, which is home to Morocco's biggest natural subterranean body of water and sits on the edge of the Erg Chebbi sand dunes. In Merzouga, stay in a hotel for dinner and the night.
You drive to the Khamlia hamlet after a leisurely breakfast and a visit to the Merzouga oasis. These people were initially carried north as slaves from Sudan. You'll meet several families and have mint tea while listening to traditional gnaoua music with them. Our next destination will be Mfis, a little settlement to the south-east of the dunes, near to the coal and copper mines where the majority of Merzouga's inhabitants used to work. After a brief break in Merdane village, we continue on to visit Berber households before returning to Merzouga and checking into your accommodation. In the afternoon, you'll saddle your camel and travel the dunes, uncovering one of the'sea of sand's mysteries. We'll make a pit break in a pristine paradise. Enjoy the desert solitude, take in the natural beauty that surrounds you, and enjoy the magnificent sunset. Spend the evening under a blanket of stars that twinkle with a brightness you've never seen before. Luxury Desert Tents are used for sleeping.
We travel to Rissani after breakfast in the desert, where we visit the traditional Berber suq and the ruined Kasbah of Sijilmassa. We drive through the Ziz Valley and Errachidia after leaving Rissani. We will stop en route for lunch before reaching Azrou where there is a cedar forest which is home to a troupe of Barbary apes.
