Morocco from the Eyes of a Tour Driver

Morocco by a Tour Driver: Through Local Eyes

I was born and raised in Morocco, and I still live here. So I see this country differently—through the eyes of a local, not a tourist. Here’s a rundown of Morocco’s top tourist spots, seen from the front seat of a tour van. No offense intended—just honesty with a side of humor.

Assamr (Southeast Morocco)

World View: A stunning region attracting tourists year-round—especially in the Sahara and valley areas.
Local View: I’m from Kelaat M’gouna in the Roses Valley—land of kind, strategic people (aka: we play diplomatic chess to keep doors open). The region has great tourism potential, but terrible infrastructure. Flooded roads and deadly highways need urgent attention.

Casablanca

World View: Modern port city with art deco charm and the iconic Hassan II Mosque.
Local View: Unless you’re into corporate chaos or pollution, skip it. The mosque and Ain Diab are cool, but everything else is concrete, factories, and fast-talkers. Think Moroccan New York… but without the Broadway shows.

Rabat

World View: Capital city, known for its French colonial and Islamic architecture.
Local View: Government HQ with stiff vibes. French is still king here—left over from the “elitist” days. Locals may seem cold, but it’s just Rabat’s professional persona.

Northern Morocco (Tangier, Chefchaouen, etc.)

World View: Gorgeous year-round, especially in Spring/Fall to avoid summer crowds.
Local View: Straightforward people (no mind games), lush landscapes, and known—fairly or not—for cannabis and narco myths. Also home to Morocco’s “rich” stereotype… which locals know isn’t always true.

Fez

World View: Cultural and spiritual capital, famous for ancient medinas and handmade goods.
Local View: “Old money” central. Locals carry themselves like aristocrats—with posh tones and confident faces. Great place for history and leather shopping, but don’t expect humility 😂.

Essaouira

World View: Coastal charm with strong winds, ideal for water sports and creative souls.
Local View: Feels like an art festival town. Everyone’s vibe is so different that I honestly can’t categorize the people. Just go. You’ll get it.

Marrakech

World View: Iconic red city with vibrant souks, palaces, and desert excursions.
Local View: Morocco in a nutshell. Slightly pricey, but worth every dirham. Locals are joyful by nature—you might walk into a spontaneous street party. And yes, yell “Atika Atikawa” in a crowd and see what happens 😉

Agadir

World View: Beach resort city with a modern twist.
Local View: Russia’s favorite! All-inclusive resorts, beach fun, water sports, and laid-back locals. It’s your best bet for a relaxing, pampered vacation in Morocco.
